LUIS PALAU TO LEAD WORLDWIDE MISSION TO

100 MILLION SPANISH SPEAKERS THIS EASTER

Luis Palau will this Easter headline a worldwide mission aimed at reaching 100 million Spanish speakers with the Gospel. This figure will include viewers and listeners of a major TV and radio campaign,  as well as those attending at least 1,000 local church evangelistic events on Easter Sunday afternoon, 4 April 2010.

Called Continente 2010, this evangelistic event – one of the largest ever to take place – seeks to build on the success of similar outreaches in 1975 and 1985. 25 years ago, a historic series of three broadcasts by Luis Palau was heard on 330 radio networks and 480 television stations in 22 countries.  Countless millions heard the Good News from South America’s Southern cone up to Mexico and across the Atlantic to Spain and to the Spanish-speaking part of northwest Africa.

Continente 2010 is another example of what the Luis Palau Association terms its ‘saturation evangelism strategy’. This has three objectives:

  • Reach as many people as possible with the Good News of Jesus Christ.
  • Mobilize the church to effective evangelism and victorious Christian living.
  • Equip the next generation of young Spanish-speaking evangelists.

Such a strategy will involve 7,000 churches in the project, establishing a radio and TV presence in every major city with a population of 500,000 or more, and massive advertising. Continente 2010 will culminate on Easter Sunday, when Palau hosts a live continent-wide evangelistic TV telecast from LakewoodChurch in Houston with Marcos Witt. Four-time Grammy award-winning singer Witt is also senior pastor of the 40,000 strong Hispanic congregation at LakewoodChurch, one of the largest in the United States. In the UK, Spanish-speaking churches in London are also considering signing up to Continente 2010.

Nigel Gordon of the Luis Palau Association commented: “Spanish is the mother tongue of almost 400m people, making it the fourth most widely spoken language in the world.  There is also a great appetite for the Good News of Jesus Christ in many Spanish speaking nations, as Luis and his son Andrew discovered when 600,000 people turned up in person to hear them preach in Buenos Aires, Argentina, two years ago.

“Continente 2010 will be a major evangelistic outreach spanning at least four continents, and we trust and pray that many millions of people will hear and respond to the Gospel this Easter”.
