Adam is an author, broadcaster and newspaper columnist. He has an acerbic wit and is known for his fresh way of of interrogating the Bible and his thought-provoking style.
His life's passion is to encourage his listeners and readers to distinguish between religion and being a follower of Jesus. 'Religion,' he argues, 'can be defined as what we do for God - although it often turns out to be for ourselves. Following Jesus is just that, it's following Jesus; learning from him, developing a relationship with him, growing to love him, and perhaps most importantly, learning to appreciate and receive his love for us.
'The word "religion" was invented by Cicero, the Roman orator/politician who lived in the first century BC, to describe people who are "tied or bound to a monastic code." But Jesus said, the truth will set you free, and following him an bring us into a degree of freedom that's unimaginable to the religious mind.'
Adam has in the recent few years stopped going to church. 'It's nothing to do with making a protest, nor is it anything to do with pain inflicted by Christian leaders in the past. When people ask me why I don't go to church I tell them there are three simple reasons; I don't want to, I don't need to, and I don't have to.
'They often respond by saying, "O, you have to go to your church!" I say why? They say, "Because it says so in the Bible!" I say where? And they say, "... Somewhere!" (If you're interested in following this line of thought, you can read my short article entitled, 'Why I Don't go to Church Any Longer.")
