Celebrities join Fearne Cotton in giving up something for the World Vision 24 Hour Famine
Now in its 23rd year, the World Vision 24 Hour famine is the UK’s largest youth fundraising event and has raised over £20 million for children and young people in the developing world.
Gathering for the launch of the 2009 World Vision 24 Hour Famine campaign that will take place between13 – 15 February 2009, celebrities such as Fearne Cotton spoke about what their planned sacrifices would be to support the campaign this year.
Liz McClarnon, winner of Celebrity Master Chef and ex Atomic Kitten will be giving up food for 24 hours, but is urging young people and anyone taking part that it doesn’t have to be food they give up, it can be anything that is important to them. For example singer Gabriella Cilmi, will be giving up singing and Fearne Cotton has vowed not to listen to any music for one day – a mean feat for a radio DJ!
Eleanor, who is currently filming Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ with Jonny Depp and Helen Bonham-Carter, says, ‘I may be better known as an actress but I’m also a 16-year-old school girl who will meet other 16-year-old and younger girls whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS in Jaipur, India. I hope to return from my trip to India with a better understanding of their situation and challenges so that I can pass on my experiences and encourage other people in the UK to get involved and fundraise for the World Vision 24 Hour Famine, which will help change these girls and their community’s lives.’
Money raised will be used to help provide alternative choices and opportunities for young girls many of whom are sex workers and therefore at more risk of HIV/AIDS, living in a community along a highway in Jaipur, India.
