THE STORY OF DAVID
Reviewed by
Lorraine Cahoon
This book is one of the most wide-ranging and complete accounts of the life of David that I have read. The span of David's story starts from his boyhood with his family, through his days as a young shepherd to his anointing by the prophet Samuel. It then charts his rise in fame as a warrior, coupled with his impact on the world as a worshipper, and culminating in his eventual rule as King of Israel.
The material of the book has also been experienced in a series of sermons preached by the author to his own congregation. It is never dry or academic, but rather warm and intimate, giving the reader a feeling of listening to someone's conversation, that person having himself been captivated by the life of David.
Written chronologically through David's life, the book is a joy to read, leaving you wanting to know "what happens next"! Ian Coffey has an ability to bring the scriptural account to story-book life, making it both enthralling and accessible.
Yet this is a solid study in scripture, its 24 separate chapters covering the vital milestones in David's life, from birth to death. The organisation of each chapter enables the reader to study the biblical story first, and then examine the roles of its various characters, before being challenged to apply lessons to daily living. This makes the book completely contemporary, for example,
"David's story reminds us.how worship and work live best together.integrity of heart and skilful hands suggests a balance.about our life before God in the secret place and our life before the world in the public place."
I found it helpful that an examination was made not only of David's life and God's purpose in it, but also of the lives of other "characters", including Saul, Abigail, Samuel, Absalom, Jonathan and many more. The cross references and explanatory footnotes at the end of each chapter are excellent as they allow the reader to delve deeper into Scripture in the exploration of David's life. Ultimately, the reader is reassured to know that a holy God can use a flawed person in building His kingdom.
This book impacted me at many levels because of the tenderness with which its subject was explored. It covers many aspects of our weaknesses as human beings, and brings fresh revelation of the grace of God towards us. It challenges us to love God, to get to know Him in the deepest parts of our beings, and to serve Him in a new way as a result of pursuing His presence in our daily life.
