The Highway Code For Happiness
by michael & hilary perrott

The Highway Code for Happiness is the third of a trilogy by Michael and Hilary Perrott, published by CWR. It follows The Highway Code for Marriage and The Highway Code for Parenting. I reviewed both, I also reviewed Just Do It, the Perrotts’ book for those who constantly put off until tomorrow that which should be done today; the procrastinator, the putter-offer, the excuse maker.
Normally when you review a book you read it through, perhaps making notes or highlighting salient points on which later you will hang the flesh of exposition. But with this one, as with the others, I don’t know where to start. It’s packed with aphorisms, pithy one-liners that are easy to remember but none the lighter for that.
Drawing on their vast experience Michael & Hilary have in this latest work provided yet another treasure trove; a practical step-by-step approach to the search for happiness. But because there are quotable quotes on every page perhaps the best I can do is to give you, the potential reader, a nutritious sandwich; an extract from the first page and an extract from the last page. That should whet your appetite for the meaty filling!
Happiness is not a state of continual bliss in which there are no tears and where no pain is felt. Nor does it wear a permanent grin. It knows disappointment, yet finds contentment; it experiences life’s blows, but remains resilient… At its core are unselfishness and service.
Happiness is not once discovered then ‘happily-ever-after’. It requires: Honesty that recognises we have strengths and admits we have weaknesses; Courage for the breaking and making of habits; Perseverance that guards the gain we make and never gives up.
And there are touches of humour too. For example, on the subject of sleeplessness; ‘As for counting sheep, a would-be sleeper put it, “I never was good at arithmetic and the concentration needed for counting sheep keeps me awake. For me sheep and sleep don’t mix.”’
I cannot recommend this little book highly enough, but you need the trilogy. Check them out at any good Christian bookshop or go online >>>
